Everyone do me a favor...would ya?

Hey you all...I have a question. I need some honest answers please...dont worry about my feelings...on some things Im fairly easy going...lol.

See that picture of me over on the right side of the screen...my profile pic...tell me honestly...do I look like a guy in any way shape or form?

The reason I ask is because I get referred to as "Mr" or "Sir" quite a lot when being addressed...generally by salespeople etc. Now I dont want to be all racist or anything but I have noticed that its generally Filipino women that call me as such...before they take a second closer look and realize their mistake. I can only surmise that happens when they notice Mr has a nice set of breasts...sigh.

Anyhow, I pretty much look like that, my picture seen there, all the time. I dont wear makeup...I do have my bad hair days...and I do wear glasses, which Im not wearing in that pic purely for reasons of vanity....but still...I dont get why Im mistaken for a man so often....anyone?

Do I look like a guy to you all?....dont worry...I can take it like a man...ha ha!!!

I can somewhat see where they would say that, but your definitely not manly or anything!

Maybe its not common in certain countries to have shorter hair?

What's wrong with wearing makeup?

I don't think that you look like a guy but, I am from a culture where it's not uncommon for women to have short hair. So it might be that they just aren't used to seeing short hair on a woman. That is if it isn't that she is getting her pronouns wrong if English is not her first language.

Hey I forgot...would you at all be interested in doing a project I created? I had the idea of everyone posting about what it would be like to spend a night at your home, about 50 people have done it so far and I'd LOVE to see yours!

Mr Condy....nothing wrong with make up...why...do you wear it..ha ha. I just never got the hang of it...too much effort with little reward...sigh.

Queen...I suppose it could be the pronoun thing...and the short hair thing...a lot of things...hmmm?

Mr Condy...a night at my house...gee...I didnt know I would be asked to cure mass insomnia...let me see what I can do.

No, you do not look like a man. I was going to say the same as The Queen; they probably are just not used to seeing a woman with short hair. In many (all?) Asian and Middle Eastern cultures, women don't even think of cutting hair short, especially as short as yours, but in the West, it's common. When I went to Egypt last year, almost everyone asked me why daughter's hair was so short, and then I noticed all the little girls there had really long hair.

Short hair, no makeup is often confusing for people from certain cultures who take a quick impression and assume man, otherwise there would be flowing hair and glimmering makeup. Filipina culture is one of these. In the US it just makes people wonder/assume you are a lesbian (one of the ones that came out late, after the marriage and 5 kids).

Make sure those breasts are front and centre and at attention, use a little eye make up, and get your hair cut by a woman at a woman's salon or friend's house, if you want to reduce the errors. Also girlie up your clothes, and wear obvious girlie, dangly earrings.

How do I know these things? I spent years with a girlie but short cut (1" to the much too long 3")and no makeup since I spent so much time swimming it was a waste of time.

Now I'm curious, do you just wait for them to correct the error, or do you communicate in your breathiest voice with a little sashay and an eyelash flutter that the poor, unfortunate, misguided, gender identification challenged person is both wrong and now sweet out of luck. Or to quote a Seinfeld episode: "They are real, and they are spectacular" [and you will never get near them] LOL

Hey Red,

Yeah it's probably all of the above--pronoun confussion, short razor cut hair, no makeup--to the degree the confusion bothers you, you can always make ajustments.

Now on to more important matters--we need a picture of the poodles. You can pose with them in your glasses if you like. I'm sure we would all love to see a candid come-as-you-are snapshot to go with the more formal studio portrait.

Sorry about the headache. Fat Too

Honestly?

Your haircut is terrible. It's so unflattering. You need to find a really good hairdresser, get some colour put in.

And some eye makeup would bring out your eyes wonderfully.

I dont know what clothes you wear - but loose baggy denim for example is more male than anything pink or glittery :-)

coolred38 said...

Umm Omar...both of my daughters have gone for the shorter cut even though they were raised in a culture that loves long hair (and some who consider it haram to cut it short...lol)

Chiara...funny enough that haircut was done by a Filipino in a ladies salon..ha ha. Cant win.

I havent really corrected anyone since they generally realize the mistake right away...lol. Its not like I want to date them or something...so no harm no foul.

btw...the lesbian comment...story there...for another time..lol.

Fat Too...I dont see me getting all that into makeup this stage in the game...I figure its something your into or your not...definitely not. What you see is what you get.

Poodle pics coming up shortly.

Fred...my hair is flaming red...cant get more color than that...and it has highlights...but are fading. My eyes are ocean blue...dont need alot of help coming out..lol. I do wear jeans...but not exclusively...and that top in the pic is pink...or maybe red...cant remember just now. I do not dress like a guy...all though I do wear the odd generic tshirt now and then...ha ha.

Maybe it's because you're all black and white and gray. Maybe try some earth tones or even some greens and blues.

Oh, wait...that's just the film.

Well, egg on my face.

No, you don't look like a dude.

My family lives in the Philippines my father my cousins we have friends there etc etc and in their culture they would not see you as very feminine. Chiara is right put on a little eyeshadow and some mascara (you don't have to go overboard and do a full makeup job) some dainty earrings, and maybe some foofy (is foofy a word lol) tops. If you like your hair keep it, if not maybe you could try a style that is a little longer and poofier. I don't know! This is my advice. I know you don't like makeup but just a little mascara and maybe eyeshadow, something light not really dark! Do you ever wear necklaces. Wear comfortable tops if you like but get some girls sparkly feminine ones. You are definatley not the girly girl like I am and thats not bad everyone has their own style, but you can do little things to make yourself look more feminine and you might find you enjoy buying a new glittery top or pair of earrings. Ok I'll shut up now, but just try these suggestions for a while and see if you like them.

it's a lovely pic, shows you're happy, strong and stable..

btw i always read your blog but never got the chance to comment.. good job, i really enjoy it :)

coolred38 said...

Mjenks...thanks...uhm...I think..lol.

coolred38 said...

Cicily...I do wear earrings...my necklace is on 24/7 and my tops are, while not foofoo...arent manly either. They are bought from the womens section...what more can I do...lol.

btw not to be mean...but it doesnt bother me that Filipinos in general see me as non feminine...while I wont be going out of my way to change just so they get the pronoun right...I was curious.

Nawal said...

at first glance, yes

smaller forehead and the haircut are usually and biologically found in men and the thin lips, would lead you to look more masculine

and the fact that the photo is black and white and does not show femanine curves etc....

*~Ange~* said...

i think it is the hair. a lot of people from those cultures tend to relate short hair to mena nd long hair to women. plus if like you said you dont wear makeup (a pretty feminine thing to do) it will also add to their suspicions.

but beyond the hair and the no-makeup - your face is clearly that of a womans.

San Antonio Cicily said...

You know what I wouldn't worry about it piss on them all. There's always gonna be some idiot out there. If you are comfortable with yourself than thats good enough! clearly you can tell from your face you are not a man! A lot of women in the military have the same haircut! Also in that heat shorter hair can be nice!

Aynur said...

I think everyone else has said what I would have said.
I used to have short-short hair in junior high/high school & a little beyond, and I was mistaken for a boy more than once. Plus, I don't wear makeup either. Or sexy clothes.

coolred38 said...

Amal...thanks for coming out and finally commenting. Apppreciate it too.

Nawal...well the photo is black and white...but Im not...lol. But I understand. Thanks.

Ange...I dont understand about the make up thing...its like a "damned in you do and damned if you dont" kind of thing. In this very hot weather I just cant be bothered...I dont know how other women keep it on...sigh.

Cicily...piss away...thanks. Lol!

Aynur...same here.

No you don't look like a guy!I imagine that you are as strong and forthright in person as you are on this blog.A lot of places would associate that persona with manliness simply because they've never dealt with strong opinionated women.
I wouldn't change a thing.

You don't look like a guy to me.In fact I like your very short hair eventhough it does look short for a girl. Here some women can be spotted with even much shorter hair!
You did mention you've got a nice set of breast.Maybe you should do like what Chiara said "Make sure those breasts are front and centre and at attention" :D
You look fine, just fine and cool!
lat

coolred38 said...

always...strong and forthright...others call it rude and opinionated...lol. thanks

lat...breasts front and center hmmm...will have to buy some better bras then I guess...ha ha.

Chiara said...

Bras--some are truly wondrous and can do so much with either so little or so lacklustre.

But enough about you--we need a poodle post!!! LOL :)

Chiara said...

PS just read the tweets. Congratulations to your daughter, and to you. At least you like him. Wait 'til you become "Gramma Cool" or "Nana Red" or the "Queen Mother of Cool", then you can complain about feeling old! LOL :)

As Salaamu aalaykum,

At a very quick glance, yes. After looking it again briefly no. HOWEVER, I came to your blog a while ago via someone else's blog so I knew you were a woman.
wa salaams

Anonymous said...

yeah, honestly at least on that pic you do.The way you are posing, your thin lips, your haircut plus the extra weight are not very feminine looking.

coolred38 said...

Chiara...Im starting to think you want a post on my poodles...lol.

Tuttie...thanks. Either way Im not too worried. I am what I am..lol.

Anon...cant do much about the thin lips (no botox here...lol)...weight Im working on...I thought the pose was pretty good...sigh.

Chiara said...

Sorry,:( was I that obvious? LOL :) For now my curiousity is sated. Take your time with the poodle post! LOL :)

Nawal said...

you don use botox to fix thin lips. collagen injections would do the trick

coolred38 said...

Chiara...will do.

Nawal...oops..my bad.

I don't think you look like a man. But, when I read you describe the color of your hair, eyes, and the shirt you're wearing...I would say that this picture is EXTREMELY unflattering. And, the haircut is not good...maybe you need some products? (but, then who can tell with this B/W photo)

If I had gotten those types of responses...I would have changed that picture so so so so so long ago. But, then again...I never would have posted it. Sorry. Cause I like your blog (and you seem like a really nice person)...but you wanted honesty. If I look at a picture and I don't think "oh...this is cute" then I don't want it ever to see the light of day.

coolred38 said...

Terri...ouch...thanks...I think...lol.

Terri's Space said...

Cool-Red: Not trying to "ouch" ya!! I like you... you're one of the few sane ones that I've come across out there (in the blogosphere). So...I hope you don't hate me =)

I'm admittedly vain...so my response is colored from my own high level of vanity. =)

BTW: Like the new pic =)

coolred38 said...

Terri...dont worry...all is good. I asked and received so no reason to cry now...lol.

Glad you like the new colored me...ha ha.

fred_says said...

OK!

Good photo.

Now - glasses. Seriously. Go get some girly ones with bling along the sides. And some lipstick! Let's see your lips stand out from your face.

A bit of weight loss would help, but you know that already.

Glasses & lippy are the next phase.

coolred38 said...

Fred...Ive had some comments on the glasses. You want to know how I chose them...walked into the optician store and grabbed the first pair that fit and looked half way decent. Apparently it was not a hit with the crowd...but was too expensive to do anything about....lol. Still is...sigh.

Lippy....hmmm

Yasemin said...

Love the new photo! I never thought for even one second that you were a guy. There are plenty of women around the world who have short hair at your age.

I think you would look even more beautiful than now with a grown out Katie Holmes bob. Not too much longer, but you could keep the bangs and have more hair on the ears which would be a tad more feminine and get those bratty ladies off your back LOL.

Love you so much sweetie!

Yasemin...thanks alot. Appreciate your comments.
