2 rednecks walked into the store today and passed a Emo type boy walking out. This boy had piercings on his lips and eyes, shaggy black hair and baggy black clothes. The two rednecks passed him by and turned with raised eyebrows and a look of scorn on their faces...and one of them said...
"That's the f**king youth of America today...and that's why Obama got elected president?"
So my question is...WTF?!!! what does a boy wearing the supposed Emo style have to do with Obama getting elected president? Did I miss something during the last presidential campaign...did Obama run himself ragged across America trying to win the "Emo" vote...and then apparently got it?
Are these two "good ole boys" trying to make a claim that NO presidential term before Obama had any sort of fashion statement all the rage during his term of election...or prior to it?
I would assume these two men were making a snide remark which was meant to portray the boy as ill mannered, unkempt and possibly some sort of criminal...merely by what he was wearing...but here's where they got it wrong...WAY wrong.
I served this boy, who might have been 15 or so, and he was very soft spoken and polite with me. He said please and thank you....and returned my "have a nice day
with a "you as well."....then left the store.
On the other hand the two fashion gurus sporting their beer bellies, baseball caps, and sweat stains under their armpits...were rude with me making loud demands and smacking their money on the table while reeking of beer and body odor. Did not say anything close to being polite...and threw the receipt on to the floor as they left.
Soooo...question? Does the old adage...don't judge a book by its lip piercings...still hold true?
It sure does. Give me an Emo type over a good ole boy any day of the week...and who knows...the way things are going in America...those Emo's just might get a woman elected next time around. One can only hope.

There is a huge effort on the part of those who voted against Obama in the presidential election to portray this country as having two opposing groups of people. It's an effort to polarize the entire country and say, "If you're not here with us on our side, then you're over there." Therefore, if there is anything about you that is remotely un-conservative, then you must be far Left, Socialist, pro-Obama. They're working very hard on this effort and it's not working. It just simply isn't true. All that's happening is that there are more people being driven away and disenfranchised from the Republican party, which is threatening our two-party system, which is bad for us all.
Hahaha! wellsaid, one can only hope.
I always wonder what in the world goes through the mind of the person on the other side of the counter, now we have you to tell us, let's hope you don't stay there long and get a better job hopefuly, not that it aint good or anything, just that you deserve better.

So sweet, really. I love polite people. I was at one time very scared of Emos. I honestly don't know why but I was. But I guess they are pretty harmless then?
Emos here wouldn't be described as having baggy clothes. Mostly, they wear fitted tshirts and near-skinny jeans. But yeah, they usually have longish hair, sometimes coloured and sometimes some black (sad style) make-up. And they do like piercings. :p
Anyway, I know a bunch and they're all really nice, kind of sensitive types (which is why they're called "emo".
WTF is right about what happened...
LOL I can relate.
Living in the boonies outside of Richmond, VA we were the only visible Muslim family. We got a lot of those type of compliments.
Clinton was president back then...what was the world coming to? LOL
Hi,
whats emo style mean?
one can only hope! Jeez but some people really suck!
Awesome post! I was one of those punk kids in high school and for a couple kids after. Funny thing is, most of us went on to get a good education and are also more interested in civic issues, while a lot of the redneck kids I knew are still alcoholics. Go figure.
O.H....I have to admit Im not too up on the current political intrigues simply because Ive been so distracted by life and other such things...sooo...uhm...huh? lol
Salman...I must admit, I get the opportunity to people watch at a whole new level. Its generally pretty interesting but sometimes just a wee bit scary when they come in seemingly wired and needing something NOW.
Suroor...my daughter is a semi emo (not quite dedicated to the cause but dips her toes)...and yes, they are generally good kids.
Candice...over here I guess the baggier clothes is due to the colder weather...yes WTF is absolutely right.
Miss Mary Ann...yup..people will always point at something different and claim its the cause of whatever ails them...whatever.
Nawal...think black clothing as the foundation..skinny and tight for the most part. Piercings and straight black hair in the eyes...maybe dark makeup as well.
Queen...SOME? lol
Stacy...you got that right. btw YOU were a punk? lol
Emo is short for "emotional." It started out that Emo kids were very focused on causes, took everything to heart (they were the original "cutters"), dark, somber, in a sad way, and very anti-drug. They now have blended and evolved and basically they're the trendy kids with skinny leg pants, black clothes, black hair over one eye, some piercings. Not to generalize. :)
And here there was worry you might run out of "rant" LOL :)
Emos sounds like a mixture between Goth and Punk.
Emos are very EMOtional, hence the sensitivity. If we all accepted each other for who we are and not what we look like, oh what a happy day that would be.
There's a "fashion police" at my work and it drives me nuts! I'm glad you're some one who does not judge a book by its piercing. :-)
Hey Red,
Understand from the weather man this morning that things have turned cold out there. I hope you are all dressed for it.
Enjoyed your observations on the local scene, we are certainly rich with diversity in this country. You are well positioned for people watching in this job of yours, shouldn't ever have to run out of things to blog about.
Hope the reunion with your sister's family goes well. Good strong family ties are the best defense against an indifferent universe.
Betty
It's very interesting to hear your views about america, as an ex-expatriate... good to hear you got a job and great to hear that you haven't stopped ranting... :D
/The Swede
O.H...ouch..your describing what my 15 year old daughter wishes she could be...shes got it all but the piercings...shes gotta wait till shes old enough to decide thats a foolish decision...I mean...up to her. lol
Chiara....no way...all rant all the time. ha ha
Marianne...something like that.
Angel...I hate judgmental people...like ARE they losing sleep over night cause of what someone else wears etc...sheesh.
Betty...so far the chilly weather has been bearable and different...nothing we cant handle. Kids had to walk to school today so maybe have a different opinion about it when they get home this afternoon. lol family reunion with nephew seems to have gone well so far...thank you.
sanna...thank you and when we stop ranting...I guess we are dead...lol.
It gets pretty cold here in Quebec (Canada). But still... tighter is thes style for emos. Baggier ones get called "yos" mostly. But they have more of an attitude than emos.
San Antonio..most of the pics I look back on and say OMG!!! too are the ones in which my mother dressed me in horrible stripes and dots..in clashing colors. Whats up with the 70's anything goes style anyhow...lol.
Candice...I prefer baggy...keeps the heat in...ha ha.
I'd trust an EMO type before any jock or cheerleader.
Of course, I used to be an "emo" type...I'm biased.
sabiwabi an emo...who would have thunk it...lol.
In my experience the hardrockers, punks, goths and emos's are the nicest people.
I always feel good going to a heavy metal concert because everybody is always so friendly and polite... Try that on a normal evening's out amongst the ''decent citizens''!!!
But then this is coming from a Heavy Metal corner ;)
Aafke...Ive never been to a concert of any kind and so will have to take your word for it...lol.
Aafke, it's totally true. Some of the best people you'll ever meet, extremely compassionate and tolerant. I love chatting it up with people like that when I'm waiting in line at various places.
I am [obviously] reading your blog backwards - most current, back - as I just found it.
I have to say your stereotypes and racism are completely entertaining [and I don't mean that in a good way entertaining - I think surprising would be a better use of a word].
I can't believe some of the stuff you write, but your blog - your rules. Thanks for the laughs you are giving me. I just wish they were the good kind.
For being in Bahrain for so many years you sure did keep your stereotypes of your youth, didn't you?
SkippyMom...I have to beg to differ with your "break down" of my blog. Please point out to me where exactly you got the racism and stereotyping from...Im curious to read through your eyes and see where my faults may lie.
This post is based on OTHER peoples stereotypes and racisms etc...but Im glad you got some giggles out of it...at least you got something from it.
