Totally off the wall post...but I've got a question....

I was having a conversation with some friends recently and one thing led to another as conversations tend to do and the "things our parents did when we were young" came up. We entertained each other with the totally oddball behavior one or the other of our parents did or the things they subjected us too etc. Nice to know I didn't have the only set of crazy parents out there...but that's not the point of this post. In the middle of all this joking and laughter I threw out something my dad did and incidentally my ex also engaged in that behavior...something of which I could never understand and never liked...anyhow.

Both of them traipsed around the house in their underwear. In front of us...the kids. (father with me and my siblings, and ex with our children)...and even sometimes when a rare friend came over...they got the wonderful vision of father/ex in his underwear too...though in this regard my ex might have restrained a little more.

Soon as I threw that into the conversation they all stopped laughing and just looked at me and simultaneously said...ewwwwww!!! Apparently none of their fathers/husbands ever did that. Go figure.

Anyhow, question for you people...did any of your dads/fathers walk around in their underwear in front of you, the kids, the neighbors etc? Or is that another characteristic of the sort of men I spent my life around? Fun!

Just wondering if there is some sort of pattern in there...

Nope. Not my father, grandfather or husband. Sorry CoolRed.....

My dad had a habit of walking around in a robe. I suspect he was naked underneath from how my mum used to joke (blegh!)).

My hubby walks around in his underwear (to be fair, they're boxers) and we have two kids aged 4 years and 18 months respectively. He reckons he's gotta stop doing that soon as they're getting older and he won't feel comfortable doing it for very much longer.

My ex did it. Even once the kids got older. No matter how much I complained, he would just laugh and act as though I was being totally unreasonable. Maybe it's something abusive men tend to do? Their way of saying, "It's my body, and see--it's stronger than yours. I don't care what you think of what I do with it. And I can impose it on you if I want."

I think I may read almost all your posts here. I don't know if I ever commented before, but since you're asking readers:

Well, my dad walked around in his pajama bottoms and white shirt.

My hubby in his white shirt and boxer shorts - but we don't have kids yet.

My husband walks around in his boxers, but our only child is two and it's not all that uncommon for me to walk around in my underwear, as well. He (husband) sleeps in his boxers and a t-shirt so usually on weekends he wakes up late and hangs around like that for awhile. I don't have a problem with it and since our son is a boy, I don't see a real need to end it. On the opposite end of the spectrum, since we have a boy, I will have to quit my scantily clad around the house days within the next year or two. :(

My aunt's husband always walks around in his underwear. It's a running family joke that if you visit their house unexpectedly and he's in the recliner with a blanket on, you know he's in his underwear underneath. He has three children, age 27, 25, and 22. The 27 year old is still living at home (a girl) and he has yet to change his ways. His wife and two daughters are also known to roam the house in their bras. Very open family, I guess. My family growing up was never like that. Although I'd let my mom see me naked (she'd come in to do laundry as I was drying from the shower, that sort of thing).

I never saw my father naked except when we went swimming. My husband never walks around naked either although his brother and dad do!

Our dad would not mind being seen by us in his boxers, he rarely would just run around in them though. He also would never be seen in them in front of people outside the family. Where I come from, which is a Muslim country, it is not very weird for men to be seen in their white undersirts at home (though my husband would never let anyone other than me see him in them), even in front of close friends, (though they would most usually wear pajama tops or t-shirts), but it is not ok to appear in boxers.

My father did not make a habit of walking around in his boxers. Neither did my husband or my brothers, and I've never seen my mom in her undies except maybe running between the bathroom and bedroom. I guess my family is naturally modest.

No - not my father, ex husband or current partner... however, what we do when the kids ( 19/25) that still live at home are actually here is different to when they are out.
But I think the flaunting does sound like part of the attitude about abuse in your case... and yes, I wonder if you are right that it might be a pattern.

Ok everyone...boxers do not count because those kind of look like shorts anyhow. Im talking about regular old white undies that leave nothing to the imagination.

It seems it's not a common thing to do anyhow except maybe when the kids are very young.

Keep em coming...I need more input.

My husband walks around in his undies and they're not boxers... they look more like biker shorts. Does that count? We do have two kids. No on here seems to mind.

My dad used to wear the whitey-tighties but we only saw him by accident when he was running to the restroom at night.

No, after several minutes of trying to remember bits of my childhood, I have to say I never saw my dad in his undies.

Nope...my dad wore boxers and besides that when we kids reached a certain age he gave us a talk on modesty both from him (no boxers etc) but from us...as we developed he gave us girls the understanding that it was inappropriate to walk around scantily clad in front of him and my brother and presumably any other man as well. And somehow he gave the talk so that i didn't have an "ick" factor. Just seemed like a normal talk.

Husband wears "tighty whiteys" but is so modest even I don't get to see them all the time and my daughter NEVER! This was a man who wouldn't give her a bath when she was a baby because she was a girl...

BTW, Happy Birthday CoolRed!

My future FIL sleeps naked. I found that out in a very disturbing way when I stayed over one night. I was in the kitchen getting some water and he wondered in. I don't know who was more embarrassed, me, my partner or the father!

OMG how nice it would have been if my father had worn underwear around us!! LMAO He seemed to think crossed legs and a newspaper were sufficient cover for sitting around on the couch watching tv.
My friends still laugh about that to this day (30 some years later)

I can't tell you how many robes he had gotten for Christmas and birthdays and he just couldn't take a hint. At some point perhaps in his 70's he started wearing tightie whities.

You might be on to something Coolred because although my father has mellowed a bit he was fairly physically abusive/very short tempered. He disciplined with an iron fist!

This is the land of the "budgie smugglers" for swimming. Underpants in swimming material.
See many a male on our Australian beaches in these.
You can also see the women "white pointers" on some beachs. I will let you wor out what they are.
My father and brothers were noit allowed to walk around in their underwear when we girls got older.

My father ran around in his underwear lol, I see nothing wrong with it! My husband runs around in his and so do my boys! I wear a big oversized t-shirt and my husbands biker shorts underwear (im not sure what you call them :)) because they are comfortable! Why not be comfortable! you know I grew up in Japan where men and women share public restrooms and they have public bath houses where men and women bathe naked together! Only in America and the middle east is nudity such an issue! Underwear cover more than some bathing suits!!!!!!

My friends fathers ran around in their underwear too, although not in front of company! maybe its just where i grew up!
